Procedures to surrender a dog to DVGRR
We want to provide the adopting family with as much information and detail about your dog as possible. Although lengthy, our Intake Profile Checklist is designed for you to relay the dog’s favorite words, toys or games (no matter how unusual they may be), behavioral history, and medical background. We have found that having this information eases the transition into a new environment because we work to duplicate the dog’s habits.
- Step 1: Read the Surrender Terms and Conditions
- Step 2: Complete the Intake Profile form (Electronic submission, but print and keep a copy for your records if desired)
- Step 3: Our Intake Manager will reply to you first by email to either accept or decline to accept the dog or with more follow-up questions. They will then follow up with a phone call. If you do not receive an email within 24 hours, please either email intake@dvgrr.org or call 717-484-4799.
- Step 4: If your dog is accepted, we will need copies of his/her vaccine records and Rabies certificate. It is in the dog’s best interest to have their entire history sent to us. Most vets are willing to send records to us directly. They can be emailed to intake@dvgrr.org or faxed to 717-484-4839. We can accept dogs that are not up-to-date on vaccines, but we want to know their status prior to arrival at DVGRR.
- Step 5: We encourage owners to bring their dogs to Golden Gateway themselves, so they can see where they will be staying. We prefer dogs arrive on weekdays as early in the day as possible, so we have all day to ensure they are settling in; however, we can make other arrangements as needed. When you schedule your surrender appointment, we will provide additional information.
Pre-Appointment Checklist:
- Review directions to Golden Gateway
- Gather favorite toys, leash, collar, food
- Bring any current medications (with dosage instructions and date/time of last pill)
- Bring all dog’s paperwork as applicable or available: veterinary records, pedigree and/or AKC registration (if available), supplemental notes, DVGRR Intake Profile, etc.
Final determination of a dog’s acceptance into DVGRR’s program shall not be made until DVGRR staff or authorized volunteer(s) meet the dog in person. If the dog being surrendered to DVGRR does not appear to meet DVGRR’s Intake parameters, DVGRR reserves the right to turn down the dog. This shall apply even if the dog was previously deemed as being accepted to the program based on a photo, following a phone or email conversation.
